Pilning Multiplex – The Multiple Multiple Unit Challenge

Are you brave enough to take on the challenge and secure your place in the Pilning Hall of Fame? Visiting different stations and travelling aboard different HST and DMU trains, score as many points as possible in a day.

Pilning Multiplex was launched in August 2018, and is open for new challengers! Please note: changes to unit scoring from 4th January 2020 onwards.

Visiting different stations and travelling aboard different HST and DMU (Diesel Multiple Unit) trains, score as many points as possible in a day. An exclusive Pilning Multiplex ticket is available to challengers successfully returning to Pilning having scored the minimum number of points required for each of the levels as shown below.

GOLD: 50  SILVER: 40  BRONZE: 30

Your Multiplex attempt must start and finish at Pilning Station. Other than returning to Pilning via South Wales, only journeys within the Freedom Travelpass Area (FTA) are permitted. See map overleaf.

Station points determined by the FTA zone in which it lies. (this is detailed in tabular format further down this web page)
 
You must alight at a station, photograph its name and depart aboard a different service to which you arrived, in order for it to qualify. You may use any stations more than once, however each station will count once only when calculating your total Mulitiplex score.

Newport (NWP), Severn Tunnel Junc’ (STJ) & Pilning (PIL) do not score. Whilst any operators services may be used to score station points, only GWR services operated by the trains listed below score train points.

Train points determined by its class or number of carriages:

43 HST (2+4set): 3 points per set
2-car 150: 5 points
3-car 150: 7 points
2-car 158: 3 points
3-car 158: 4 points
2-car 165: 2 points
3-car 165: 3 points
Class 166: 2 points

You must travel aboard a GWR operated train service between 2 stations within the FTA and photograph either its DMU set number or in the case of a HST 2+4 set, its power car numbers, in order for it to qualify.

Every different train set used will score train points. When more than one set is working a service, every set will be eligible to score train points. You may use any train sets more than once, however each train set will count once only when calculating your total Mulitiplex score.

When returning to Pilning, only the westbound train passing platform 2 will be eligible to score points. Trains between Newport, Severn Tunnel Junction and Pilning will not score.

No minimum connection times. Use only scheduled public passenger train services. No rail replacement bus services or any other forms of public or private transport permitted, including between stations on foot.

Challengers may only submit one challenge for any given Saturday. Rules and B/S/G qualifying points are subject to change at any time. Always visit www.pilningstation.uk prior to travelling. All journeys taken at challenger’s own risk. Always be “Rail Safe”.
